BJP puts in place 35 presidents

Amid speculation of rebellion in its ranks over the election for the post of presidents in 45 municipalities across the state, the BJP on Tuesday bagged 35 positions.
 
The presidential election in four municipalities will be held on Wednesday. Congress man-aged to get its candidates elected in five municipalities while Independents managed to sail through in rest of the five.

The BJP had won 38 out of 49 municipalities in the recently concluded elections. BJP general secretary Purshottam Rupala said their presidential candidates were given mandate on Tuesday morning and election for president and vice-president in 35 municipalities were held without major hiccups for the party. The municipalities where the Congress won include Dholka, Amreli, Palanpur, Palitana and Mahua wile Independents won in

Viramgam, Bagasara, Khambhalia, Nadiad, and Vyara. NCP candidate Varsha Patel was elected as vice-president in Nadiad. While all the other municipalities that went to poll were bagged by the BJP candidates. Independent Muslim candidates of Godhra supported BJP in the election to post of president and vice-president. Election of Siddhpur, Himmatnagar and Modasa municipalities will be held on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the BJP also gave mandate for the posts of president and vice-president in district and taluka panchayats on Tuesday and selected candidates filed nomination forms the same day. The BJP had won 16 district panchayats and 138 taluka panchayats in recent elections.
