Court rejects Vasava, Bhabhor kidnap theory
November 11, 2005

The Gujarat high court on Thursday dismissed two petitions by Congress workers alleging that their candidates who won the recent panchayat polls were kidnapped and held captive by the BJP for political gains.

Giving a twist to her alleged kidnapping by BJP workers, Congress candidate Vijaya Vasava, who won the Kosambi seat Bharuch district panchayat polls, appeared in the court of Justice Anant Dave and stated that neither her life nor that of her family members is in danger. Even as a habeas corpus petition was filed claiming that she had been held cap- tive since November 1, Ms Vasava stated in the court that she is not in danger after which the dismissed the petition. Earlier, her husband Channa Vasava, who claimed to have escaped from Silver Oak Resort on S.G. Highway, had alleged that the whole family was held up at the resort.

Ms Vasava had also gone and exercised her franchise in favor of BJP on Wednesday under police protection at the Bharuch district panchayat office.

Justice Dave also dismissed a petition alleging that Congress candidate from Jhalod taluka panchayat Kanta Bhabhor, her son Mukesh and Dalsinh Bhabhor were kidnapped by BJP workers. While the petition had alleged that Dalsinh Bhabhor had filed his nomination for the post of vice-president of the Jhalod taluka panchayat, an affidavit filed by Dahod DySP informed the court that someone else had filed the nomination on his behalf. Kanta Bhabhor also informed the court that she was not kidnapped and was in Ambaji on a pilgrimage following which the petition was disposed off. Surprisingly, before coming to the high court on Thursday morning, Vijaya Vasava filed a complaint with the sector-21 police of Gandhinagar, accusing Chattrasinh Mori, education minister Anandi Patel and others of having a hand in alleged abduction of her family. Sector -21 police said the application has been for-warded to Bhaurch SP V.S. Malik for further investigation
