Auda delays clearance of service roads
November 16, 2005

In a knee-jerk reaction to the high court's December 31 deadline to clear and make operational the service roads on both sides of the S.G. Highway

The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority removed encroachments near the Iskcon Circle last week. However, now the urban authority seems to have gone into a slumber. Sources said influential people associated with key landmarks on the highway like clubs, restaurants and religious places are putting pressure on Auda to spare illegal extension of their boundary walls and enclosures. It remains to be seen whether these structures will be removed, and on time, to fulfill the court orders.

After clearing the encroachment around Iskcon Circle, Auda has to clear the service road along the Rangoli restaurant, Rajpath Club and the Gurudwara. Auda will also have to proceed with acquisition of government land near Wide Angle multiplex, for which it has

Approached the Public Works Department. The government procedures are likely to take long and it seems highly unlikely that Auda will he able to meet the court deadline to pave service roads from Gota Circle to Sarkhej. However, chief executive officer of Auda Jagdish Pandya assured that Auda would proceed with the work on service roads and meet the court deadline. "We have demolished illegal constructions in the past and there is no reason why we will give in to pressures now," he said. Mr. Pandya stressed that all constructions falling on the town-planning schemes will be removed. However, he clarified that the land near the Thaltej Circle and the Gurudwara comes under the National Highway Authority of India and the Auda has no jurisdiction there. NHAI will be informed about the encroachments there and they will take necessary action
