Tourism Sector on a high priority lists of the State Government.

The Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL) appears to have finally shrugged off their cautious approach towards private sector entry and have taken a determined bid to explore the tourism potential in the state.

A comprehensive CD-ROM on the state, authored by well-known professional travel agent Sanjay Barot was recently launched in the city by TCGL. The CD-ROM on Gujarat titled ‘Explore the Unexplored’, encapsulates the diverse image of the state with information thrown in for foreign travellers. The Manual on Gujarat covers all-important aspects of the state for a potential tourist.

The government had realised that little headway had been made in boosting the tourism industry in the state. Inspite of the private participation policy on tourism having been announced quite sometime back the results were yet to be seen.

All ventures, which failed to take-off would be closed while efforts to bring in the private sector in tourism would be intensified. In keeping with this the government had decided to increase the budgetary allocation for the tourism sector and act as a catalyst rather than a provider.

While more investments were for the tourism infrastructure there was a need to introduce innovative ideas too. The state also had plans to shortly introduce coastal cruise to exploit the state’s large coastline.

Additional chief secretary, industry, mines and tourism C K Koshy said that as TCGL director way back in 1978, he had not realised the tremendous power of market forces in sectors like tourism. "Twenty years later, we accede the fact that the government is not the vehicle for promoting tourism," he said.
