‘RDX was
to create havoc in state, kill VIPs’
Top
police officials of the state have admitted that the six Pakistani intruders,
who were arrested with RDX and large supply of arms, could have planned
to eliminate VIPs visiting the state. This, they said, could have been
one of their many objectives as the consignment originated from the Inter-Services
Intelligence.
The possibility that the
notorious Sharief Khan, who lives in Karachi at present, had sent the
infiltrators to blow up Sabarmati Central Jail for releasing his brother
Javed Khan currently lodged there cannot be ruled out, a senior police
official from Kutch said.
Another possible motive cited
by the interrogating officials was that the consignment was sent for spearheading
communal tensions in major cities in the state. The explosives and initiation
devices seized by the police had tremendous destruction potential of destroying
several buildings in the state. "The magnitude of destruction depends
on the manner in which the RDX was used," an officer at the Joint Interrogation
Centre in Bhuj said. "But certainly hundreds of bombs destroying life
and property could have been made from the RDX seized," he added. Investigating
officers dealing with the case said the consignment could have been meant
for distribution in other states and Gujarat might have been just a safe
transit point to pass unnoticed. Other than that, the sources said, retired
police officers in the state were on the hit list for their tough stand
on underworld activities in the state. The officials, on condition of
anonymity, said the seizure of 56 pistols indicates that these
were going to be handed over to smaller units or "hitting squads" for
executing the task.
The five Pakistani infiltrators
arrested by the state police along with the seizure of large quantity
of RDX and arms were on a "big supply mission," informed top police officials.
According to officials at
Joint Interrogation Centre at Bhuj, where the infiltrators have been lodged
for ‘interrogation about their mission, the real motive of the mission
will be exposed within a week. ‘The infiltrators’ next stopover will be
known very soon," an interrogation officer said. The officials told that
the interrogation of the infiltrators has been going on but their motive
of sneaking into Indian Territory with the large consignment of arms has
not been ascertained. "We are swiftly progressing in the case and will
certainly achieve success in tracing out the real objective of these infiltrators,"
Mr A.K. Singh, district superintendent of police, Kutch, said. "But the
scope of investigation is quite large and nothing can be struck out at
this point," he added. Meanwhile, security in Mumbai has been beefed up
further following the seizure of arms and explosives in Kutch, Mumbai
joint police commissioner D. Sivanandan said on Tuesday.
"The threat in Mumbai is
real, but the man on the street need not worry as all necessary measures
have been taken to ward off any designs of ISI," Mr Sivanandan said here.
"We have taken all professional steps to safeguard the city from infiltrators,"
the joint police commissioner said adding "the ISI threat is not new to
Mumbai. We have been dealing with it for quite sometime now."
