Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel's announcements Update…State may set up its own rights panel soon

  1. The state government is considering setting up of a state human rights’ commission. Chief minister Keshubhai Patel announced this at a meeting of MLAs here in Gandhinagar.
  2. Mr Patel said that the state government would soon announce the new mines and minerals’ policy for encouraging investment and progress in this sector. The policy will focus on balanced exploitation of mineral resources to get maximum benefit out of it.
  3. The chief minister announced that the Ahmedabad-Nadiad section of the Ahmedabad-Vadodara express highway will be completed in 18 months’ time as the project has now been taken over by the National Highway Authority and the project no longer faces any legal hassles. The Union government has allotted Rs 500 crores for the project in the 1999-2000 financial year.
  4. Mr Patel has denied that there is a power shortage in the state and expressed confidence that the state will further consolidate its power availability once power projects with total capacity of 2,000 MW, currently in various stages of implementation.
  5. About infrastructure development in the state, Mr Patel announced out of Rs 12,000 crores investment towards development of ports in the state, Rs 11,000 crores came from private sector companies and financial institutions. Where is Telecom Infrastructure? If IT is the priority sector we need considerable investments in telecom.
  6. The state government will recognise the Khedutpothi as a legally authorised document and an amendment to this effect will be made in the Gujarat State Revenue Act. This was announced by chief minister Keshubhai Patel at a Khedutpothis distribution function held at Sanand in Ahmedabad recently. He said 48 lakh farmers in the state will receive the Khedutpothi by December 1999. He also said that it is necessary to give legal protection to the farmers and the Khedutpothi could give that protection to the farmers.
