Colleges
on a holiday from today
Colleges affiliated to Gujarat
University have protested against the abrupt sacking S.B. Vora from the
post of vice chancellor with a three-day bandh beginning on Thursday.
The decision was taken at
a meeting of the Gujarat University College Management Association, the
Gujarat University Area Teachers Association, Gujarat University Non-Teaching
Staff Association, and Gujarat University Principals Association. University
staff will also observe the bandh.
However, colleges, which
are examination centres, will allow students to take exams. Colleges will
work on the next three Sundays so that, students can make up for lost
classes.
The associations also decided
to stage dharna next Monday along with members of the university executive
council, academic council, and the University Court.
The lone voice against the
closure of colleges at the meeting was of L.D. Arts College principal
A. U. Patel. But it was lost in the clamour. His college management was
all for the bandh.
All India Students Organisation
and Gujarat Students Force has opposed the bandh saying that it would
affect studies. President of (GSF) Hemendra Badgi has threatened that
if colleges went on a bandh then, they would self-immolate in the protest.
Charges against Vora
- No prior approval of and intimation to
the chancellor about the Thailand tour.
- There was no political clearance from
the Ministry of External Affairs, leading to gross misconduct and insubordination.
- His clarification to queries superficial
and unacceptable
- Show cause notice under Bombay General
Clauses Act 1904, section-16, issued in July '98
What
do you think?
Was the state government's decision to dismiss the vice - chancellor,
SB Vora, right?
