L K Advani rules out the renaming of Ahmedabad City

Union Home Minister L K Advani has ruled out the renaming of Ahmedabad, saying it could not be done because it did not figure in the national agenda for governance.

Advani said that since the government at the centre was following the national agenda for good governance, there was no question of changing the city’s name. When pointed out that his own party in Gujarat was vociferous in its demand and wanting to launch an agitation against its own government at the centre, he said, "No one will do that and there will be no protests over the issue by his party" The home minister’s categorical statement is a major setback to the local BJP unit, which was preparing to make a representation before him in this regard and help it to be sorted out being the local MP and this being a local problem.

Earlier in the AMC general board meeting, repeated use of the word Karnavati instead of Ahmedabad by the Mayor Joitaram Patel drew a flak between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Patty (BJP) and the opposition. While moving a resolution on celebrating birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as ‘National Integrity Day’, the mayor referred to Ahmedabad as Karnavati.

The Leader of the Opposition Himmatsinh Patel during the discussion then raised the issue. He said the BJP though had adopted a resolution and the state government had cleared the same, the central government has rejected the offer and has informed the high court about its intentions of not changing the name of Ahmedabad to Karnavati.

A case was filed in the high court challenging the decision to change the name from Ahmedabad to Karnavati. He said the BJP could use the word in its party correspondence, but when it came to the general board or even the corporation matters, the party should now stop using Karnavati.

Hasankhan Pathan even threatened to move the court, if the BJP further continued to use word Karnavati for Ahmedabad City.
