Ahmedabad police bid to become people-friendly

Minister of State for Home Haren Pandya released a citizens’ charter on Tuesday. The charter, named Millennium 2000, lists the rights of the citizens vis a vis the working of the Ahmedabad police.

Inauguration Soon

Union Home Minister L K Advani will inaugurate the newly constructed Police Bhavan at Gandhinagar on May 1. Minister of State for Home Haren Pandya said the building which will house the state police machinery has been built at a cost of Rs 10 crore. Pandya also announced that a new control room would be set up at the Ahmedabad city commissioner’s office in Shahibaug. The new control room would be equipped with the latest equipment and computers in addition to a conference hall, the minister said.

In a bid to become more people-friendly, the minister said the city police would introduce some "new" measures such as the beat system which will make the constabulary answerable.

Another one called the
Tapori Register will list criminals involved in petty crimes and yet another called the Anti Romeo Cell will list those who have a record of sexual harassment. "We are taking unprecedented steps for police welfare," said Pandya, to a question on working hours and shortage of staff in the department.

The charter copies will be shortly available from police stations in the city. The charter describes, in Gujarati, the rights of the citizens, rights of a complainant who files the First Information Report, important information regarding arrests, provisions for persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, women, and several other aspects.

Asked about the High Court order on a petition filed by BJP MLA Yatin Oza on inaction against two police officers, the minister said, "We are studying the order, and will take action accordingly."On the shortage of police personnel in the city, he said the government had recruited 6;500 constables and was in the process of recruiting police sub-inspectors. "We have also promoted 314 constables," he said.
