Infrastructure Development Board to conduct study on transit system

The number of vehicles in Vadodara has doubled in the last five years, increasing the pollution along with it. Keeping this and many other related issues in mind, the Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board has decided to conduct a study of integrated transit system in the Vadodara Municipal Corporation limits.

According to highly placed sources, the study aims to prepare a comprehensive report on the transit system. It will study existing public and private transport systems and they will make suggestions for improvement, keeping in mind requirements of the changing times.

The idea is to develop effective public transport system by integrating the public transport and private transport systems. According to sources, the roads are being widened and there are plans to increase the number of bridges.

Consultants for undertaking the study were shortlisted much before the civic elections were announced and the process to invite the price bid is on. Sources said the study was expected to cost about Rs 3 crores. A similar study will be conducted for Surat. The document is to be a part of the state government's Vision 2020 plan where infrastructure facilities on various fronts will be projected.

Sources further informed that the study will identify major corridors hampering integration of various transport systems. The issues of traffic, road and bridges' engineering will also be covered in the study. It will give an insight into whether running monorail in Vadodara will be feasible and suggest some points to reduce pollution.

The report will also give suggestions about the land use pattern as they play a major role in traffic congestion.

Officials claim that the study will be more comprehensive than the one prepared by Central Institute of Road Transport, Pune at the behest of Vuda.
