‘Centre awake to Gujaratis stuck in Fiji’

Union external affairs minister Jaswant Singh assured chief minister Keshubhai Patel that the Centre is conscious of the security of the Gujarati community settled in Fiji.

Mr Patel had expressed concern over the developments in Fiji and had appealed to the Central government to take care of the security needs of the Gujarati community settled there.

Mr Singh said the Centre shares the concern of the state and is making efforts to get the support of the international community to resolve the crisis as well as get support from international organisations such as the Commonwealth.

Mr Singh has said that a high level Commonwealth mission will leave for Fiji shortly and an official of the external affairs ministry has visited Fiji after marshal law was declared there and has given the first hand report of the conditions there to the Centre.
