'Mid-term polls not on BJP agenda'

BJP MLAs of Ahmedabad and Mehsana district met the national BJP president K. Jana Krishnamurthi at the Circuit House Annexe on Tuesday. There was also a one-to-one meeting between Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP president in the evening.

According to party sources, Mr. Krishnamurthi discussed with the MLAs as to how effectively the violence can be controlled. The sources further said the BJP president also discussed the police officials to be posted to control the communal fury.

During the discussions, Mr. Krishnamurthi sought to know whether the fresh bout of violence that has rocked the state has been politically motivated.

He held confabulations, one-to-one meetings and elaborate discussions for two to three hours with the party functionaries, MLAs and ministers to get indepth information of the present situation in the state and city.

The meeting also discussed the agenda for the state executive meeting to be held at Karamsad on Saturday, sources added.

However, a minister in the Modi-Cabinet, when asked whether Mr. Krishnamurthi discussed election at any point, said, "We do not want elections at this juncture. We have been elected for a five-year tenure and intend to complete it."

BJP MLA from Naroda Dr. Maya Kodnani said, "The meeting was basically to discuss steps to be taken for restoration of peace and rehabilitation of the riot-affected."

However, Dr. Kodnani maintained that there was no discussion of any kind regarding fresh polls with the BJP president.
