waters released in Kevadia bypass
Waters of Narmada started flowing in the
main canal through the irrigation bypass tunnel at Kevadia colony on Tuesday.
Caretaker Chief Minister Narendra Modi performed the rituals to welcome
the Narmada waters.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Modi said with
the flowing of water in the main canal, nearly one lakh hectares of land
will get water for irrigation and 9,000 villages and towns will obtain
drinking water. Also, the arid land in North Gujarat can be irrigated
as lakes, reservoirs and other underground sources will have an increase
in their water levels.
Mr. Modi said that with the commencement
of water inflow in the canal, it will be possible to generate hydro-electricity.
Chairman of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam
Limited, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said that unlike in the year 2001, when
Narmada water was being pumped for use, the natural inflow of water can
