30 more bird injuries

Almost 30 birds were rescued by various organisations working to prevent cruelty against animals on Thursday. According to officials, this number is far less than they had come across on Uttarayan and Vasi Uttarayan.

"There was a badly injured kite which had been thought to the hospital on Thursday. It could barely lifts its wing that was almost severed by manja," informed Dr. H R Patel, veterinary surgeon at a hospital in Ellisbridge run by Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The society kept receiving calls all through the day about birds either being injured by 'manja' or those entangled in kite threads.

"Presently, we mainly receive complaints about birds that have got entangled in thread hanging from trees, electric wires and such places. In the process of trying to free themselves, the winged creatures injure themselves. Generally, their efforts are made in vain, so a team is sent to rescue them," said an official of Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Officials at Kankaria zoo, too, had received a complaint about an injured vulture on Thursday. "We, received a call from Shahibaugh about a badly injured vulture. The vulture was brought to the zoo and is being treated here," confirmed R K Sahu, zoo superintendent. If birds are not injured greatly, they are not confined in the zoo. The winged creatures that have been hurt badly are looked after till they are strong enough to fly. Zoo officials have rescued two kites and two vultures in the last two days.
