More
than 3.2 lakh children below the age of five were administered the
polio vaccine by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Sunday,
which marked the second round of this year’s Pulse Polio Immunization
Programme.
While
the polio vaccine was administered at booths that were set up across
the city, the health department staff will go from house to house
over the next three days to administer vaccine to those children
who have not been administered the vaccine.
The
highest number of vaccines were administered in the South Zone while
ward wise, the highest was Vatva ward, also in South Zone. The mayor,
Deputy mayor, municipal commissioner, standing committee chairman
and other officials too made rounds of a number of booths and administered
the polio vaccine to children below the age of five.
The
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, along with other organizations
like Rotary and Lions Clubs, Lokseva Mandal, Ashirwad Sewa Trust,
AMA and others organized the polio immunization drive. Students
and doctors of AMC run hospitals and medical college also took part
in the drive, a AMC statement said on Sunday evening.
The
100 Battalion Rapid Action Force (RAF), Ahmedabad also participated
in the polio immunization programme on Sunday. The RAF men established
four immunization camps at Vastral, Ratanpura, Mahadevnagar, and
Sumin-Shrijee Park. The women constables of this unit administered
vaccine to the children who were also given sweets later.
About
4,100 children were administered the vaccine on Sunday, a statement
from the Commandant, Vastral said.
