Police to probe death of detainee
Twenty-seven-year old Mohammed Riyaz alias Bawo Sheikh died of brain hemorrhage on Monday morning after being allegedly beaten up by Danilimda police on last Thursday. The deceased was being taken into detention for consuming liquor.

Sheikh was admitted to V.S. Hospital on Thursday in an unconscious state and his relatives have alleged that he was beaten severely by ASI Molilal and his staff, resulting in his death.

Additional commissioner of police Satish Verma said an inquiry has been ordered in the case.

Mr Verma said according to policemen escorting Sheikh, the deceased was being taken to the police station when he stumbled and fell unconscious. Danilimda police inspector B.G. Jha said policemen called the doctor and later took him to the hospital. Mr Jha asserted that the police, at any point of time, did not beat him up.

When questioned whether any of the concerned policemen were suspended, Mr Jha said that there was no reason to suspend anyone. The postmortem report of Sheikh has yet to arrive. Meanwhile, some people demonstrated against police atrocity outside Danilimda police station on Monday evening.
