Protesting teachers caned
Gujarat University teachers were severely beaten up by the police in Ahmedabad on Sunday for organising a protest meeting without police permission at a venue on Sola road.

The lecturers were agitating under the banner of Mahagujarat Navnirman Front and have given a call of college bandh on Tuesday. At least 15 people were injured in the police lathicharge and more than 100 lecturers detained at the venue. MNF claimed that the lathicharge resulted in fracture for one of its member and another had damaged his ear drum. The police detained front convenor K.S. Shastri and other members. Mr Shastri later said their agitation will continue undeterred in spite of the terror let loose by the state government.

He said they would organise a meeting in town hall on Tuesday and invite all sections of society against the working style of the present government.

However, the police maintained that no force was used against the protesting teachers. Ghatlodia police inspector G P Doshi said they just detained the teachers who organised a meeting without their permission and they were released later.

The Congress criticised the use of force by the police on the protesting university teachers. In a release Congress leader Hasmukh Patel said the state government has unleashed terror on those who are protesting against its unjust steps. Force is being used against farmers, students and now teachers to stop their agitation, he said.
