THE CITY

Its climate
On the whole, the state is moist in the southern districts and dry in the northern districts. The intensity of the climate has been reduced by the Arabian sea and the Gulf of Cambay. The forest covered mountains on the eastern boundary also help reduce the intensity of the climate rendering it pleasant and healthy. The winter season starts from November and continues till mid-March. After that the days start getting warmer though the nights are pleasant. From mid-March to mid-June is the summer season. At its peak, the temperature touches 45 or even 46 degrees celsius. The south west monsoon lashes the State from mid-June and continues till September end. Like the first half of March, in October too the days are warm but the nights pleasant.

Its people
Intermingling of Races
In more than one sense, Ahmedabad has been a field of conquering races which settled downhere. From ancient time this western gateway of India has been a place where a lot of action, reaction, and interaction between various ethnic and linguistic forces has taken place which in turn has resulted in the synthesis of many races and cultures. Different races brought with them differing political institution, unique social customs, varied cultures and creeds. Each horde brought its own language, arts and crafts, poetry, thought forms, philosophy, social practices and religious life. The Aryans came by land and settled down in Saurashtra, Anarta and Apparanta. Persians, Arabs and Africans came by sea through Saurashtra ports for shelter, trade and at times for conquest. Then, just before and after the start of the Christian era, hordes of Kusanas, Hunas and other tribes descended on Gujarat. The coming in of these foreigners resulted in the fusion of various cultures and traditions which were either assimilated or adopted by the original inhabitants.

The settling and mixing of these foreigners with the Aryans became so indistinguishable as to earn this region a rather dubious distinction of being called a 'Mlechcha' country.
